JadaTalks Presents: Collecting, Curating and Covid

Miami Art Week Presents:
Paid Workshop: Collecting, Curating, and Covid presented by JadaTalks

Every industry felt the economic reverberations of the global pandemic this year. With galleries, museums, and auction houses being shut down and then reopened at limited capacity, art lovers were faced with a set of challenges that they never saw coming. The future of collecting and curating will certainly look different than it did pre-pandemic. This workshop will inform attendees on all of the latest innovations that are transforming the art world.

Tune in December 3 at 1 pm EST to hear from our guest speaker Emily Kapes, Curator of Art of The James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art,  and John Selburg, Lead-Curator at Broward College South, during this in-person and online live streaming art conversation.

As Curator of Art at The James Museum, Emily Kapes manages the permanent collection of Western American and wildlife art and the rotating special exhibition calendar. She is responsible for collections care, research, and exhibition design. She develops in-house art exhibitions related to the collection and coordinates a variety of borrowed exhibitions each year.

Prior to her current role, Kapes served as Art Collection Curator at Raymond James Financial for 11 years, managing the private art collection of Tom and Mary James.  In 2017, she directed the art transition from corporate office to museum setting and planned the gallery layout and exhibition design for the new institution that opened in April 2018. Over her career, she has judged and juried national art competitions across the country – from Wisconsin to Wyoming.

She earned bachelor’s degrees in art history and in studio art from the College of Charleston.  When she isn’t sharing narratives about Western American art with museum visitors, she trains with her local running club. Kapes, a Georgia native, resides in St. Petersburg with her husband and 9-year-old twin boys.

If our dreams arise out of the recorded imagery of everyday life, assembled as neurons fire out of context and out of order but with the semblance of sense and reality – then John Selburg’s drawings are somewhat like dreams. The artist, an MFA in Drawing (University of Missouri, 2009), lives on the Atlantic Coast of South Florida, adjacent to protected habitat where tropical flora and fauna thrive. Dense with the likes of endangered orchids, sea turtles, and wild apes, Selburg’s real environment might seem surreal to most. This is the fodder for his compositions, which are created with minimal direct reference and yet thoroughly imagined, with a foot in the far end of reality.

Join us on December 3-6, 2020 during Miami Art Week at Jada Art Fair. Jada Art Fair was founded by local Miami artists in 2019 as an art movement that has since branched out to various countries, having had its own gallery at Jada Paris Art Week just last month in France. Jada Miami Art Fair 2020 will feature over 120 pieces, including paintings, multimedia installations, murals, and sculptures in its 4-day fair (Dec. 3rd – 6th). As a continuous commitment to education, Jada Miami Art Fair will also host JadaTalks — a conference panel of local and national scholars, business leaders, trend setters, and noteworthy artists, both in presence and virtually JadaTV.com. Jada Miami Art Fair is situated in Normandy Isle (Miami Beach), with 5000sf of exhibiting space, divided into 4 main galleries, featuring original works and special collector-edition art prints.
